Financial sciences have been taught at the Krakow University of Economics since its foundation, and academic units specialising in banking were established as early as 1949. In 1950, these units became part of the Chair of Finance.

In 2003, the Chair of Banking and the Chair of Corporate Finance were separated as independent organisational units. At that time, Professor Ryszard Szewczyk, PhD, DSc (Habilitation) was appointed Head of the Chair of Banking. Since January 2020, the Chair has operated under its current name.

Since 2016, the Chair of Banking and the Global Financial System has been headed by Professor Ewa Miklaszewska, PhD, DSc (Habilitation).
