The teaching and research of financial sciences have constituted an integral part of the academic activity of the Krakow University of Economics since its inception. Units engaged in banking-related issues were established as early as 1949 and, in 1950, became part of the Department of Finance.
In 2003, the independent Departments of Banking and of Corporate Finance were created. The first Head of the Department of Banking was Professor Ryszard Szewczyk, PhD. Since January 2020, the Department has operated under its present name — the Department of Banking and the Global Financial System. Since 2016, the Department has been headed by Professor Ewa Miklaszewska, PhD.

- Sources of efficiency and areas of competitive advantage in banking;
- Bank management and risk management;
- The impact of technological transformation and fintech competition on the banking industry.
